Too stupid for PhD? Doctoral impostor syndrome among Finnish PhD students

Abstract Impostor syndrome (IS) refers to the inner speech of self-doubt and belief that you are not as competent others perceive be. The university can be considered a work environment prone IS, especially because requirements present higher education science policy, which emphasizes continuous evaluation, competitive spirit, focus on performance excellence. It is therefore understandable many doctoral students have begun experience inadequacy uncertainty during their postgraduate studies. This study focuses prevalence IS among Finnish PhD ( n = 1694). In particular, attention paid background factors in experiences attitudes related linked. Theoretically, we interpret phenomenon habitus formed through an individual’s life associated with it. Based results linear regression analysis, lack encouragement childhood low level planning when applying for studies explain emergence statistically significant manner.
